Visual interpretation of "Or did you stay on the floor?": She disappeared down the hallway,; And you watched her close the door.

No. 075

December 8, 2024·14 lines·1 min read

Or did you stay on the floor?

And you watched her close the door.

She disappeared down the hallway, And you watched her close the door. You walked back into your apartment And sat on the floor, staring through The floor-to-ceiling windows at the river. And then the state of the world Changed, Bathing you in a purple-orange Glow of sunset shimmer. Everything seemed so close! Did you rush back out and knock on her door To show her? Or did you stay on the floor, Transfixed?

Stay in the room a little longer.

A way further in

Not the final meaning. Just a closer read, a better question, and a few nearby poems worth opening next.

Start with the concrete details: the room, the body, the parent, the door. They are carrying the feeling for you.

Opening line

Where the door opens.

She disappeared down the hallway,

Center line

Where the temperature changes.

Bathing you in a purple-orange

Leaving line

The line to carry out with you.

Transfixed?

If you came here carrying something

If your inner world still has your family in it, these poems know that language.

Survival

These poems meet the reader where memory and upbringing still shape the present tense.
